Twelve Rites for a Drowning Moon
Twelve Rites for a Drowning Moon
Partial Lunar Eclipse at 4°54' Pisces — August 28, 12:18 AM ET
I want to tell you what I'm doing, and then I'll tell you what you're doing.
At 12:13 in the morning on Thursday I'm going to be standing in my kitchen in Brooklyn with the lights off and a bowl of tap water on the counter, and I'm going to look at it for about ninety minutes. That's it. That's the whole rite. I'm not going to charge it. I'm not going to drink it. When the Moon comes back out of the shadow I'm going to pour it down the sink and go to bed.
If that sounds anticlimactic, good. Half of what follows is that simple. The other half is not, and I've marked which is which so you can pick your Thursday.
First: what we are not doing
We are not cutting cords. Every eclipse someone tells you to cut a cord, and this is the wrong eclipse for it. This Moon sits at the North Node — the forward point, not the discard pile. August 12 was the taking. This one is the showing. You cannot cut something that already left, and if you try, all you do is perform a break-up with a room that emptied months ago.
What you do instead is finish. Not sever — finish. There's a difference and your body knows it.
We are not making moon water. I said it in the spread post and I'll say it here with the receipts: an eclipsed Moon is a Moon at maximum drain, not maximum fullness. Ninety-three percent of her face is going into the Earth's shadow. Water sitting under that takes on the absence, not the light. If you want moon water, wait for the Aries full moon in September and I'll walk you through it.
Eclipse water is a real thing and it is not altar water. You make it the way I described up top — a bowl, uncovered, through the eclipse — and then it goes down a drain, into a storm grate, or onto ground you don't grow anything in. It is a solvent. It is for washing things off. It never goes in a jar, it never goes on your face, and it absolutely never goes in a bath you're sitting in.
A note before you start: lunar eclipses are safe to look at. No glasses, no pinhole, no filter. Go outside. She'll turn the color of an old penny.
The correspondences, and why
Every rite below runs on water, because Pisces rules the element directly and because this is the last Pisces eclipse until 2034. Stones and herbs are chosen by traditional rulership of your sign — Mars for Aries and Scorpio, Venus for Taurus and Libra, Mercury for Gemini and Virgo, the Moon for Cancer, the Sun for Leo, Jupiter for Sagittarius and Pisces, Saturn for Capricorn and Aquarius. Not modern rulers. The old ones hold better at eclipses.
Substitutions are allowed. If you can't find the herb, use the plant that's already in your kitchen and belongs to the same planet. If you can't find the stone, use a coin, a nail, a piece of glass — the material matters less than the metal or mineral class it belongs to.
Timing: anywhere in the window between 11:33 PM ET Wednesday and 1:51 AM ET Thursday. Peak is 12:13 AM. If you can only do one moment, do the peak.
ARIES — Pisces in the 12th
The Iron Bath
Deep. Mars. Iron, salt, rue or garlic. Water.
You've been paying maintenance on something invisible and it's been coming out of your sleep. This rite makes it visible enough to end.
Run a bath. No candle, no music, no light except what comes through the window. Into the water: a fistful of coarse salt and one iron nail — actual iron, not stainless, a cut masonry nail from the hardware store is perfect and costs forty cents. If you have rue, three sprigs. If not, one crushed clove of garlic in a scrap of cloth so you're not fishing for it later.
Get in. Say nothing for the first ten minutes. Then say out loud, in the dark, the thing you've been paying for that you'd be embarrassed to itemize. Say the actual thing. Not the tidy version — the version with the name in it.
Get out. Do not drain the tub yet. Take the nail out, dry it, and put it in your freezer. Drain the bath and leave the room. In the morning, take the nail out of the freezer, walk it at least one block from your door, and drop it in a storm grate.
The freezer is not decorative. Iron holds what you hand it, and you don't want it holding that in your bedroom overnight.
TAURUS — Pisces in the 11th
The Unfollow
Simple. Venus. Rose, copper, water.
The room changed. You already know which room.
Bowl of water on the table. One tablespoon of rose water stirred in, or three rose petals, or — genuinely fine — a splash of the rosewater from the Middle Eastern grocery. Drop in a penny (copper, Venus's metal; pre-1982 if you're particular).
Open your phone. Sit in front of the bowl and go through one social feed, one group chat, one contact list. Every time you hit a name that costs you something to keep, say the name out loud once and touch the surface of the water with one finger. Don't unfollow yet. Just name and touch.
When you're done, count how many times you touched the water. That number is the rite. Write it down.
Unfollow, mute, or leave on Friday — not tonight. Tonight was for finding out the number.
Pour the water out the window or into a plant pot. Keep the penny in your wallet through September.
GEMINI — Pisces in the 10th
The Dissolved Title
Deep. Mercury. Paper, water-soluble ink, lavender. A crossroads.
Uranus is sitting on your Rising this week squaring the whole thing. Something about how you're publicly known is finishing, and your instinct is going to be to announce it Thursday at 1 AM. This rite exists so you don't.
You need water-soluble paper if you can get it, or the cheapest tissue-thin paper you have, and a fountain pen or washable marker — something that runs.
Write your title. The actual sentence people use to describe what you do. Just that, nothing else. Fold it once.
Glass of water on the windowsill where you can see the Moon. Drop the paper in. Watch the ink come apart — it takes a few minutes, and you should watch all of it, because the point of this rite is the interval between legible and gone, and that interval is where you actually live right now.
Add three lavender buds. Let it sit until the eclipse ends.
Then carry the glass to the nearest intersection — a real crossroads, two streets meeting — and pour it into the gutter. Walk home a different way than you came.
Do not post anything until September. That's the second half of the rite and it's the hard half.
CANCER — Pisces in the 9th
The Closed Book
Simple. The Moon. Silver, jasmine or white flowers, water.
A belief is going and it feels like fog, not grief.
Find the book. There's a book — or a course, a podcast, a teacher — that used to steady you and doesn't. Pick it up.
Bowl of water. Something silver in it: a ring, a spoon, a piece of foil if that's what you've got. Three white flowers or a pinch of dried jasmine floating on top.
Hold the book closed in both hands over the bowl. Say: thank you, and I'm done. Say it once. Don't elaborate — the 9th house does not need your reasoning.
Put the book somewhere it isn't. Different shelf, different room, a box, a stoop giveaway pile. Not the trash. It was true once.
Pour the water at the base of a tree. Keep the silver.
LEO — Pisces in the 8th
The Number
Deep. The Sun. Gold, obsidian, bay. Water and a mirror.
You had your eclipse. This is the invoice, and the rite is going to be less witchy than you want and more useful than you expect.
Before you do anything ritual: get the number. Log in. Open the statement. Find the actual figure of the thing you're entangled in — the debt, the shared account, the settlement, the money that isn't cleanly yours. Write it on paper. The whole number, no rounding.
Now. Mirror propped up, bowl of water in front of it so the water catches the reflection. Lights out. If you kept the obsidian from August 12, it goes in the water. If you burned the bay laurel then, burn one more leaf now and drop the ash in — that closes the pair, and this eclipse is the closing half of that pair.
Hold the paper with the number on it and read it out loud to the mirror. Just the number. Then say: this is the size of it. It is not larger than this.
Read it again. And again. Keep reading it until it stops sounding like a verdict and starts sounding like arithmetic. For most people that's somewhere between six and twenty times.
Keep the paper. Fold it into your wallet. That's the whole point — 8th house fear survives on being unmeasured, and you just measured it.
Pour the water down the drain with the tap running.
VIRGO — Pisces in the 7th
The Two Glasses
Deep. Mercury. Two vessels, salt, lavender or fennel.
You've been running a two-person system alone and calling it competence.
Two identical glasses. Fill both with water. One is you. One is them — the partner, the business partner, the person who's somehow both.
Into your glass: a pinch of salt and three fennel seeds or a pinch of dried lavender. Into theirs: nothing. Leave it plain. That's not an insult. That's the diagnosis.
Set them side by side where the moonlight can reach, and look at them. Same water, different weight. Say out loud everything you have been carrying on their behalf. Every item. Take as long as it takes. As you name each one, tip a little water from your glass into theirs.
Keep going until the levels are even, or until you run out of items, whichever comes first. If you run out of water before you run out of items, that's the reading and you should sit with it.
Drink from your glass. Pour theirs out the window.
Then — and this is the actual rite — write down one thing you're going to ask them for. One. Not a list. Send it Friday.
LIBRA — Pisces in the 6th
The Vinegar Wash
Simple. Venus. Vinegar, rose or thyme, one surface.
The daily machine broke. Fine.
Pick one surface — your desk, the kitchen counter, the shelf where the thing you've been avoiding lives. One. Not the apartment.
Clear it completely. Everything off.
Warm water, a splash of white vinegar, three drops of rose water or a sprig of thyme. Wash the surface with your hand, not a sponge. Slow. All of it, including the parts nobody sees.
While you wash, name the routine you're going to drop. You've known which one for months.
Put back only what you actually use. Whatever doesn't go back on is your answer.
Pour the bucket down the drain. Do not rearrange anything else in the house tonight — Uranus in your 9th will hand you a whole reorganization scheme at 2 AM and it is a trap.
SCORPIO — Pisces in the 5th
The Red Thread and the Bowl
Deep. Mars. Red thread, iron or steel, dragon's blood or cinnamon.
You've been performing joy. This finds out what's real.
Bowl of water. A steel or iron object in the bottom — a key, a nail, scissors. A pinch of cinnamon on the surface, or dragon's blood resin if you keep it.
Cut a length of red thread the distance from your fingertips to your elbow. Tie a knot in it for every creative thing you're currently carrying — every project, every person you make things for, every unfinished file. Name each one as you knot it.
Now hold the thread over the water and go back through the knots one at a time. For each one, ask out loud: would I make this if nobody saw it?
If yes — leave the knot. If no — untie it while it's over the water, and let whatever falls, fall.
When you're done, look at the thread. What's left is your actual 5th house.
Coil the thread and put it under whatever you make things on — desk, easel, laptop, cutting board. The water goes down the drain with the metal fished out and dried.
SAGITTARIUS — Pisces in the 4th
The Threshold Wash
Deep. Jupiter. Hyssop, cedar, tin or brass. Your actual front door.
Home is dissolving under you and there's no alternative on offer yet. Don't force one. Wash the threshold instead — it's the oldest 4th house rite there is and it works whether you're staying or going.
Bucket: warm water, a handful of hyssop (or cedar tips, or a cinnamon stick broken up — all Jupiter), and something brass or tin dropped in and left there while it steeps. Twenty minutes.
At the peak of the eclipse, take the bucket to your front door. Open it. Wash the threshold — the doorframe, the sill, the floor on both sides, the inside face of the door, and the doorknob. Both sides. Especially both sides.
While you wash, say: if this is where I live, hold. If it isn't, open.
Then leave the door open for the length of one full breath, and close it.
The water does not go down your own drain. Carry it out and pour it in the street, in the gutter, away from your building.
Sleep with a glass of plain water beside the bed. If you dream, write it down before you're all the way awake — the 4th house answers in dreams and this is the last time this axis will ask.
CAPRICORN — Pisces in the 3rd
The Frozen Sentence
Simple. Saturn. Lead or iron, myrrh or comfrey. Your freezer.
There's a conversation you've been having in installments for two years, and Pisces just took your words away.
Write one sentence. The one you've been trying to phrase correctly since 2024. Write it badly. That's the instruction — do not draft it, do not improve it, do not find the right word. Write the ugly version in one go.
Fold it. Put it in a small container, cover it with water, add a pinch of myrrh or a dried comfrey leaf if you have one, drop in something heavy and dark — a lead sinker, an iron washer, a dark stone.
Freeze it.
Not to bind anyone. To hold it. You're not ready to say it and you're not going to be by Friday, and Saturn is the planet that knows the difference between suppression and timing. Frozen is timing.
Take it out at the Aries full moon in September and decide then.
AQUARIUS — Pisces in the 2nd
The Coin in the Bowl
Simple. Saturn. One coin, salt, water.
Something in your material base is finishing and the real question underneath it is what you're worth with none of it.
Bowl of water, a pinch of salt, one coin — any coin, but a real one you had in your pocket, not one you went looking for.
Sit with it in front of the Moon. Name, out loud, three things you own that you keep for the story they tell about you. Just three. Just name them.
Then take the coin out of the water, dry it on your shirt, and hold it in your closed hand for as long as the eclipse lasts, or as long as you can stand.
That's it. One coin, one hand, ninety minutes. It's the simplest rite in the set and about eight people are going to tell me it was the hardest one, because you're being asked to hold exactly one unit of value and find out whether it's enough to sit with.
Coin goes in your pocket for the rest of the year. Water down the drain.
PISCES — Pisces in the 1st
The Second Half
Deep. Two parts — and part one was August 12.
If you did the split rite at the solar eclipse, this is where it completes. If you didn't, you can still do this — read the part-one instruction and do it Wednesday during the day, then do part two at the peak. Compressed works. Skipped doesn't.
Part one (August 12, or Wednesday daytime): you wrote your name — the whole thing, every name you've been called including the ones you don't use — and sealed it somewhere dark without reading it back.
Part two, at the peak of the eclipse:
Get it out. Don't read it yet.
Bowl of water — the biggest one you own. Into it: a pinch of saffron if you have it, or sage, or a broken cinnamon stick (all Jupiter, your old ruler, and the old ruler is who you want at a Piscean ending). Something tin or blue glass in the bottom.
Now read the paper out loud. All the names. Slowly.
Then put it in the water and hold it under with your fingers until the paper gives up its shape. It takes longer than you think. Don't rush it and don't look away.
When it's pulp, say: that was two years. I'm not building the next one tonight.
Take the pulp out, squeeze it, and bury it — a pot, a tree bed, a park. If you have no ground, wrap it and put it in a drawer you don't open until 2027.
The water goes out. All of it. Run the tap after.
And then do nothing. This eclipse walked backward through your entire sign for two years and this is the last degree it touches. There is no next Pisces eclipse until 2034. You have eight years to find out who you are without that. Do not rebuild yourself by Friday to make the discomfort stop. The discomfort is the eight years starting.
Afterward
Whatever you did, drink a glass of plain water and eat something with salt in it before you sleep. Water rites leave you thin and you have a Uranus square running through Friday. Get weight back in you.
And whatever arrives in the next seventy-two hours — the call, the number that doesn't reconcile, the sentence someone says without meaning anything by it — let it be information for a week before you let it be a decision.
Before you close this tab
These twelve rites are the sign-level version, which means they're the widest possible fit. Real ritual timing is degree work.
Go run your transits in Mami Wata's Mirror — free — and find out whether 4°54' Pisces is landing on an actual planet in your chart or just passing through a house. If it's touching something, your rite matters more and your timing is narrower than what I wrote above.
And if you'd rather be told before the aspect than the morning after: Full Access gets you personalized transit alerts to your inbox, Ashlee's Notes, the full library, and the Lunar RITE.box delivered for the lunations that actually earn a rite — stones, herbs, and candles already matched to the sky, so you're not in a hardware store at 11 PM looking for an iron nail.
Some of you will be in that hardware store anyway. Respect. See you at 12:13.
